OCEANIC Initial 6 POLL

HEY y’all! TIME to get TO PICKING the book. Thanks for ALL THE great suggestions and THE over 2,000 hits LAST week. Super glad so MANY PEOPLE are interested. After the JUMP YOU’LL find a link to a poll to PICK THE first 6 videogum READS. Now if you DON’T know the book, NO NEED to fret! Tomorrow I plan on posting an (un)official MONSTER READING LIST which will have basic (no spoilo!) SUMMARIES of every SUGGESTION, monster suggestion, critic blurb, and AN AMAZON link. So it’s OKAY TO wait until THEN!

The POLL will be OPEN until Midnight on FRIDAY THE 17th. Announcements of THE INAUGURAL reads will TAKE PLACE the following MONDAY which should GIVE EVERYONE who wants to jump on this SHIT time to get the first book. I hope everyone IS AS pumped as I AM to rip into SOME AWESOME reads.

Please remember TO VOTE for 6 books AND ONLY 6 books. Voting for MORE WILL invalidate your SUBMISSION and you will NOT BE able to SUBMIT again.

    w00t!

  2. nat says:

just voted- really like the list of choices!

couldn’t we do better than bookgum, though? literagum? storygum? fictigum? just saying

    • Dip Dobson says:

‘Bibliogum’ fits the naming format of the other sites but I kinda like that this is unofficial and that the name is a little grunt-y.

    • WELL WHEN you start A BOOK CLUB feel free to NAME IT whatever YOU WANT.

ALSO I think “book” works BEST DUE TO other -gum SITES BEING named for the MEDIUM through which the TOPIC IS enjoyed: stereos, videos, and BOOKS.

      • nat says:

just saying! constructive criticism, you know?

anyway, very excited to get started on this- just finishing ‘let the great world spin’ by colum mccann- possibly a recommendation for a future round?

  3. GradStudentsAreTheWorst says:

I voted! I can’t wait to put my new Kindle to use! *subtlebragginggum*

    • dr. girlfriend says:

me too! ah, the good life.
(really it is because i am a graduate student._

      • GradStudentsAreTheWorst says:

This is great! We should have a grad student party. Except nobody will be able to attend because we’re all too busy with our research.

  4. Chris Trash says:

INFINITE JEST FTW!!!! I need an excuse to photoshop Winwood into the ONAN.

  5. Briadru4 says:

I’ve been meaning to read A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius for a while, so everyone vote for that. Or I’ll murder you. With my murder dogs.

  6. moonvest says:

I am currently reading The Savage Detectives and would appreciate everyone voting for it so I have an excuse to finish.

That makes it sound not good, but so far it is! I’ve just been listening to Fuck You on repeat instead of reading on the commute.

  7. Faviator says:

that is the one book i DON’T want to read! we may have to take it outside, Briadru4.

  8. jmii says:

Very interesting list – can’t wait to see how the poll comes out. Has anyone read “Never Let Me Go”? It was one of my picks.

  9. nfts says:

bookgum is an excellent idea! i’ve been following videogum for a while, but never actually came around to commenting (i’m strangely shy when it come to posting anonymous comments on the internet)… great list!

    • thequeenofdoorbells says:

I’m more of a lurker on videogum as well, I rarely comment. Mostly because of the time difference, I’m in Australia and by the time I read the post the discussion is usually over and done with!

  10. Wally Kovacs says:

I’ve read a couple on the list (Cavalier and Klay, Heartbreaking Work). And of course, the Monsters should be a shoe in …

  11. sophia says:

Dang, I should have gotten here in time to put in for some Murakami, since I’m going through his stuff now and he seems up the general Monster Alley. Also, can I violently downvote “Portnoy’s Complaint”?

  12. karla anne says:

at least ONE eggers… even if it is one i read 8000 years ago. yay!!!

  13. lilbobbytables says:

Oh, I am all atwitter with breathless excitement!

  14. hotspur says:

I made my 6 choices, a nice mix of things I’ve already read but would re-read and things I have been meaning to read.

Advance warning: I am a slow reader.

  15. Charlie says:

I’ve never actually participated as a monster on videogum. I’ve just watched from the shadows. I think I’ve found the place for me. Bookgum is the greatest idea I’ve heard all day. Given, I am a 23-year-old grad student so I’ve only been up about ten minutes…and that oatmeal wasn’t exactly shouting out any stock trade info…

  16. KW says:

Hey guys! I’m mostly a lurker at videogum because I tried to not spend TOO much time on websites, but I just got fired. So I’m ready to READ! Let’s get this thing going.
